What this estimate includes

This calculator is designed for a quick planning comparison, with every important assumption visible. It includes:

  • Gross bonus
  • Editable federal, payroll, state/local, and other withholding percentages
  • A 22% federal default for a separately identified 2026 supplemental wage payment

How the calculation works

Estimated bonus check = gross bonus × (1 − total entered withholding percentage)

Results update as you type. Rounding happens for display; calculations use the full values entered. A real statement, pay stub, contract, or account agreement may use different timing and rules.

A worked example

A $5,000 bonus with 22% federal withholding, 7.65% payroll tax, and 3% state withholding produces an estimated check of $3,367.50 before other deductions.

Important limitations

This is an educational estimate, not financial, tax, legal, or employment advice. It cannot account for every local rule, fee, benefit, deduction, compounding convention, or personal circumstance. Use it to understand direction and scale, then verify an important decision with the relevant employer, lender, account provider, or qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the federal default 22%?

IRS Publication 15 allows an optional flat 22% federal withholding method for separately identified supplemental wages of $1 million or less in 2026. Employers may use another permitted method.

Does 22% mean my bonus is taxed at 22%?

No. Withholding is a prepayment. Your final income tax is determined with the rest of your annual tax return.
